…Throwback Thursday

Thanks to the flourishing social media of Instagram and Twitter, today (and every Thursday, for that matter) has been dubbed #tbt or #throwbackthursday. Urban Dictionary defines throwback as “a sudden reminder from the past”, and therefore Thursday is the day of each week when millions take the opportunity to post an old photo or memory. Sometimes the throwback evokes nostalgia; sometimes it brings about a good laugh. Yet, at other times it may cause us to question our younger selves, “why?!” and simply make us grateful for our current level of maturity.

In spite of the trendiness of social media, the joy that so many find in taking a stroll down memory lane  is not a new concept. Being this intentional in reflecting on the past has proven to be beneficial and is frankly, highly encouraged.

But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. Psalm 77:11 (NLT)

This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. Lamentations 3:21 (NKJV)

Take a moment today to recall just seven (if you can stop there) of the bajillion things that God has done for you, your family, your friends or a person that you don’t even know personally. I challenge you to think about the good that occurred years ago, and to additionally be mindful of the good that occurred just yesterday, last week and even this morning. We are loved. We are cared for. We are provided for. We are breathing in this moment, and in itself, that is one of His wonderful deeds.

Remind yourself of His amazing works; it will stir and increase the joy, peace, love, faith and hope in you. If He did it then, He will do it again.

Jesus be a throwback Thursday, everyday.

…Powerful Influence

Therefore, God elevated Him to the place of highest honor and gave Him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. He promises to do whatever we ask in His name. What an awesome influence His name has in our every situation. It’s powerful; It’s reliable; His name makes a difference. Simply said, “…if you want His power you gotta call His name.”

…People Watcher

People Watcher

Ok, I’ll admit it. I’m a bit of a people watcher. I am one of those that tend to observe other people and their interactions, in a crowded place, and usually without their knowledge. #dontjudgeme

While my people watching efforts are quite haphazard and nosey in nature, I have come to learn that it is a real science to some. Several sites list the top places to people watch by city. Even more sites provide instructions on how to begin people watching, and advise against intrusiveness and recommend natural observation. The majority of people who watch other people simply do it for the fun. Yet, others do it for sociology and anthropology study or for character inspiration in books being authored.

He will not let you stumble; the One who watches over you will not slumber. Psalm 121:3 (NLT)

He watches His people. He watches with the heart to keep us covered, safe and protected. He watches without ceasing or failing. How comforting is it to know that we’re being watched and cared for in every moment of every day?

…Lesson in Love

Throughout this week, I’ve recognized and learned so much about love. The fresh perspective, from the lens of His love, has helped me to realize my value in Him and the priority I should set in expressing His heart to His people. And, in the acknowledgement of the facets of His love, He’s given me a renewed fire and desire to love Him first.

In all of this, I am so thankful that He has made it explicitly clear that this love I’ve explored this week is forever for us and remains with us.

Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture…None of this fazes us because Jesus loves us. I’m absolutely convinced that nothing—nothing living or dead, angelic or demonic, today or tomorrow, high or low, thinkable or unthinkable—absolutely nothing can get between us and God’s love because of the way that Jesus our Master has embraced us. Romans 8: 35-39 (MSG)

What lesson in love is He teaching you?

My prayer is that you (and I) choose, today, to abide in His everlasting love. Choose, today, to recognize that He knows everything about you and despite, He loves you the same. Choose, today, to know that He desires to be in relationship with and lavish on you.

He loves you, whether you like it or not. Always has. Always will. There is no greater love.

…Love Mandate

il_fullxfull.354545968_8uykSo many of us have our gaze fixed on love this week. In our everyday, the emotion is aimed at the people, places and things that we hold to the highest regard. But, most of all in this week, my prayer is that we each allow our attention to hone in on His love and loving mandates for us.

His real, abounding and limitless love is all about us. In as much as His heart is for us (self), His desire is also to turn our hearts outward (away from self). Daily, He tells us to:

‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Matthew 22:37-40

In abiding in His love, He’s calling us to reciprocate and love on His behalf. But how?

Love Mandate #1: Love Him by obeying Him. John 14:15

Love Mandate #2: Love His people in the same way He loves you. John 15:12

And why should we? Because His love impels us to (2 Cor 5:14).

Take a moment to ponder on just one facet of His love for you. What does it motivate you to do in response to Him? What does it motivate you to do for another?

Jesus loves you

For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations. Psalm 100:5

His love never fails; it never gives up; it never runs out…
