You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. Jeremiah 29:13
The sight of a rainbow delights me; fascinates me; and frankly, puts me in awe. The beautiful phenomenon appears when light reflects in water droplets within the sky, and in turn takes on the form of a multi-colored arc.
As a child, the rainbow gave me hope of a pot of gold and a glimpse at a short, old man in a green suit. In our culture, we adults recognize it as a symbol of diversity, pride, peace and creation, amongst other things. As Christians, its meaning is so much more.
And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” Genesis 9:12-16
The covenant of God’s grace is represented in His spectrum of light, and this promise to Noah extends to each of us today. Furthermore, the rainbow displays the assurance of Christ Himself.
And above the firmament over their heads was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like a sapphire stone; on the likeness of the throne was a likeness with the appearance of a man high above it. Also from the appearance of His waist and upward I saw, as it were, the color of amber with the appearance of fire all around within it; and from the appearance of His waist and downward I saw, as it were, the appearance of fire with brightness all around. Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. Ezekiel 1:26-28 (NKJV)
Thus, the rainbow comes with reminders that are better than (that pot of) gold. So, the next time a rainbow appears – whether in the sky, on a flag, t-shirt or cup – may we remember His grace, His mercy, His love, the beauty of His creation and that He keeps His promises.
April showers bring May flowers. May the showers bring a beautiful cause to remember.
